lost but not forgotten

In the last 6 days, all that has been the focus of every news report, and stories in the newspapers was the awful news that a 29 year old woman was missing after beginning to walk home alone on a Saturday night. Concerns for her welfare & the need for witnesses to come forward was a major proirity, her handbag (minus her phone) was found in a laneway only minutes from home a few days later, prompting fears something worse had happened. But there was one thing that would help with investigations.

CCTV footage from two different locations have been used to job peoples memories of Saturday night. Maybe someone saw her but was unsure as to whether it was or merely another person matching the description of this woman. Maybe someone spoke to her moments before its suggested she was abducted. It was all over the news, social media went nuts, facebook, twitter, youtube just a few who posted the footage hoping to find someone. Anyone. And it did, at this point in time a man has been arrested. Possibly charged with the murder & abduction of this 29 year old woman.

It really made me wonder, if it wasn't for the CCTV cameras, would the news reporters still report so much? Would they have posted her photo all over the news every segment they had?

In recent times there hasn't been many reports of people going missing, but unfortunately the statistics frighten me. In Australia 3,500 people of differing ages are reported missing every year. that works out to be approximately one every 15 minutes, 0.1 in every 1,000.

An example of the lack of repetitive news reports is one that's not only close to home, but chills me to the bone.

Siriyakorn "Bung" Siriboon just 13 went missing in Boronia less than 10 mins from where I live. She left for school and never arrived there..
Her school didn't notify the parents to say she had not attended her high school for the day, it was not concerning to not see a child in class for a day; 'maybe they aren't well', 'Assigments are due today, quite a few missing'... When Bung didn't return home that afternoon her step father rang the school, no one had seen her all day which was a bit out of the ordinary. He could've picked up the phone and called his step daughter if she hadn't forgotten to take her mobile phone with her in a twisted turn of fate.
She disapeared in broad daylight. Where could she have gone?

Police have searched far and wide for this girl, but without many credible leads, the trail has gone cold, more than a year later & none of her belongings that she would've had with her that morning, books, pencils, a packed lunch made by mum and placed in a lunchbox, maybe she took her diary that morning, her school jacket- could she have taken it off. Not even her school bag has been located during this whole time.
But what if like the woman who went missing 6 days ago, Bung had walked past somewhere that was equipped with CCTV? If an adult had paid more attention to the school girl walking on her own... The last sighting reported it was believed Bung had in fact almost reached her school gates. But what if she was spotted somewhere else? getting into a car, talking to someone anything? maybe more people would've come forward, maybe if she had been in a better neighbourhood? What if she had walked with a friend that day? Or been driven? Will she ever be found? Is she safe? not come to any harm?
Some of which you never want to think about or bear to think about is, is bung gone forever? Will they find her body?

Daniel Morcombe, 13, was missing since 2003, it wasn't until 2011 that it was confirmed remains found were that of the boys. Daniel's parents never gave up hope that he would eventually be found.
What would've happened if his bus never broke down, or the replacement didn't just drive past him? What might've happened if there were cameras situated nearby?

What if there were more CCTV set up? I for one would feel a bit safer, for my family, friends, and every other person in Australia, if it meant more people were found quicker.
Unfortunately there's just too many maybes.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by the 3,500 missing persons every year, one every 15 mins a day.
Remember if you see anything or hear anything, report it. Because it could help bring closure to peoples families.

Here is the CCTV footage released identifying Jill Meagher moments before she disappeared.
